Global Hand Washing Day (2020)

Global Handwashing Day (GHD) is an international handwashing promotion campaign aimed to motivate and mobilize people around the world to improve their handwashing habits. Frequent Washing of hands at critical points mostly at this period of novel coronavirus (COVID-19) is very important for the safety and the general welfare of the community we serve.

Global Handwashing Day is an annual event marked by the international community to be taking place on every 15th October. The global campaign is dedicated to raising awareness on handwashing with soap as a key factor in diseases preventions and eradication. The overall purpose is to improve healthy body and promote hygiene as a measure to save lives. The first global hand washing campaign was held in 2008, during which over 120 million children around the world washed their hands with soap in more than 70 countries. This has been a norm since the leaders of thought have marked this date (15th October) as the day for Global Hand washing Day.

This year (2020) Global hand washing day

theme is “Hand Hygiene for All”. This is a call for all the societies to join hand to tackle the recent global issue through global initiative which is a call to promote hand hygiene. Frequent hand washing with soap and water should be indispensable strategy in combating the war against corona-virus which has inflicted pains and loss of lives across the world. To address this scourge, the need for constant washing of hands with soap and water cannot be ruled out in maintaining a proper hygiene practice. Picking up this responsibility as one of our core mandates to enlighten and protect the vulnerable communities which we are serving, CHAD International in partnership with Plan International lunched a massive campaign on hand washing to some selected communities in Borno state, Northeast Nigeria to commemorate this year’s Global Hand Washing Day. Over 102 children were thought on the effectiveness of hand washing in Meshimari community.

Children staying in the selected project sites and education learning centers were enlightened on the need for frequent or regular hand hygiene practices in diseases prevention at this critical point in time of corona-virus.

 This is to protect their health, their environment and to stay safe from being attack from corona-virus (COVID-19) pandemic and infectious diseases. The overall idea of hand washing is to inculcate them with culture of hand hygiene through regular hand washing with soap and water.

The key massages were centered on enlightening the community members on the proper ways and time when they are to wash their hands and other health tips precautions.

Hands must be washed with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.

  • Cover nose and mouth when coughing and sneezing, wash your hands immediately
  • Wash your When your hands are dirty
  • Always wash your hands before and after eating
  • Do not forget to wash your hands after using the toilet
  • Wash your hands after touching a surface of an object
  • Whenever you visit a sick person, do not neglect the attitude of washing your hands
  • Wash your hand thoroughly after touching a pet or animals
  • Always wash your hand after having a handshake with people, friends or even a relative
  • Wash your hands after appearing in a public gathering.
